Personal Data Management in 2026: A Practical Checklist

Where your personal data lives, who can read it, and what to do about it — a short, non-paranoid checklist for 2026.

Most people manage their money more carefully than their data, even though the data is what predicts the money. This is a short checklist for taking practical control in 2026 — not a manifesto, and nothing that requires giving up the services you actually use.

1. Inventory the top ten

List the ten services that hold the most about you: email, phone OS, bank, primary retailer, streaming, health app, ride-hailing, work suite, social account, cloud storage. Ninety percent of your digital exposure sits inside them.

2. Pull one export a month

Rotate through the list. Request your export from one service per month. You will discover what is actually being kept — often more than you expected, sometimes less.

3. Turn off ad personalisation where it is free to do so

It is a one-click change in most account settings and removes the most common third-party sharing pipeline. You will still see ads; they simply will not be trained on you.

4. Consolidate authentication

Use one password manager and one primary identity provider. Sprawl across accounts is the single biggest driver of leaked credentials.

5. Give your data somewhere to live

Exports on your laptop are inert. A personal data layer — a vault you own with an AI layer that can read it on your terms — turns the exports into something you actually use. That is what My Data Agent is built for.
